Both the living and the shopping are large, very large, in Dallas-Fort Worth, where word has it that "if it can't be bought here, it can't be bought."
Dallas, packed with more shopping centers per capita than any other U.S. city, is home stomping grounds for both Neiman Marcus and JCPenney, and also boasts Highland Park Village, America's oldest shopping center. Greater Dallas gets a leg up from the 175-acre Dallas Market Center, the world's largest wholesale trade complex, with $7.5 billion in annual retail sales. Dallas retailers include Macy's, Stanley Korshak, Lord & Taylor, Tiffany & Co., Chanel, Calvin Klein, Polo / Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Avenue, Rodier Paris, and Nordstrom. Such names appear alongside many other department stores, specialty shops and restaurants in regional malls such as The Galleria (fashioned after the Vittorio Emanuelle in Milan), NorthPark Center, and Valley View. Shoppers also flock to neighborhood centers such as The Shops and Galleries of the Crescent, Plaza of the Americas, Travis Walk, Inwood Village, and Casa Linda. Native Victor Costa, known for copying designs of Paris couturiers for Dallas socialites, has his fashions up for grabs at several area boutiques. Dallas also lays disparate claim to Todd Oldham, globally hailed for his avant garde designe duds, and to the Haggar Apparel Company, huge in men's slacks manufacturing.
Fort Worth, also a power shopper's dream, has boutiques, upscale shops, flea markets, antique stores, and malls. West side's Chapel Hill features World Market, Borders Books, and Mi Cocina, plus HEB Central Market, for imported foods, hard-to-find items, and chef-prepared meals. Northeast Mall, anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Dillard's and Foley's, has more than 140 specialty shops. Ridgmar Mall, anchored by Tarrant County's only Neiman Marcus, Dillard's and Foley's, offers separate districts for fashion, sports, and kids. Hulen Mall, has Foley's, Dillard's and 120 specialty shops. Sundance Square, spreading out over 20 historic blocks, features specialty boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. Stockyards' Station, big on western apparel stores, touts Cowboy Walking Tours.
In Grapevine, between Dallas and Fort Worth and near DFW International Airport, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World is at Grapevine Mills, the state's first and largest mega-mall, with more than 200 manufacturer and retail outlets, off-price retailers, and specialty stores.
